Giving things away... and earning $$$

It's been awhile since my last post.  I am again going through my Lent tradition of giving away 40 things in 40 days.

As I was working at this, I came across a box of books that I no longer need.  I was able to sell these for cash.  They were mostly textbooks from teaching that I won't use.

Have you been finding ways to make money on items you no longer want?  If so, please share below!  I think we can all use some inspiration.  :)

Less clutter, more energy, more money?

I have heard it said that a cluttered space leads to less energy (feng shui) because the clutter cuts off the flow of energy.  Think about when you clean out a messy drawer and feel revitalized.  That is feng shui.  Anyway, I am hoping to bring more energy back in my life today with a clutter-clean up!

Less clutter can also lead to better spending habits.  Often times, we put things in the back of the closet and forget we have them.  Today, I will do an assessment of what I have, need and can toss.  Maybe I will even find some loose dollars lying around.  :)

I am also putting a ton of stuff in the "sell" pile.   My sister and I will be having an upcoming garage sale.  Thus, organizing can also lead to ca$h.  Who doesn’t like that?

Stay tuned!

No gym membership, cheap workouts

I have never paid for a gym membership.  I love working out but do it outdoors (biking, walking, jogging) or in the comfort of my home.  I used to tape a workout and then do it at my convenience. The cost was minimal.

My former roommate then got me hooked on the Biggest Loser workouts.  I have purchased one DVD to replace the one we used together (cost $9- still less than a gym membership, but I also waited for it to go on sale).  This weekend, I found two workout DVDs at a garage sale for $2.  What a deal!  You never know what you are going to find at a garage sale.  (My next hunt is for a new iron- we currently have two and they are both on the fritz).

The NeverEnding laundry detergent

Today, I was spring cleaning and was beginning to run out of laundry soap. In the midst of things, I didn't want to stop and run to the store. Instead, I turned the bottle over and balanced it on the cover. I literally have gotten three more loads out of the bottle when I normally would have tossed it.

A new habit has formed!

$1 haircuts

I work at a local community college and just found out the first week of the month is $1 haircuts in the cosmetology department. Add in a tip and you still beat prices of discount salons. :)

Dress your best, for less!

We host student success day at our community college. I was tapped to present "How to Dress Your Best, For Less." It was a super fun workshop and the room was full.

Tips included:
  • Surveying your wardrobe and deciding what you need. If you need a black sweater, or specific color item try finding it at the Goodwill. They sort by color.
  • Hit up the after season clearance racks.
  • Buy shoes at an outlet mall.
  • Affordable accessories are usually found at Dots.
  • Shop at Marshall's or TJ Maxx for business suits.

Bracelet gifts

I recently got a large bag of chunky, international beads. In my free time, I have been making these into bracelets. It is my intention to give these to friends as gifts. I have also thought of selling them at a local store, but we will see.
